The Museum of Art History is located in the heart of the beautiful capital of Austria on Maria Teresa Square, and is one of the architectural elements of the ensemble Maria Theresien-Platz, which also includes the Museum of Natural History, a wonderful park and a monument to the Empress. The authorship of this amazing project belongs to architect Semper.

In addition to halls with archaeological finds, ancient monuments and artworks, the Museum of Art History also includes an art gallery, which has the status of world significance.

The objects of art, which are now in Vienna and are a national treasure, began to be collected in the 15th century by the Habsburgs in the Imperial House of Austria. A particularly significant contribution was made by Ferdinand II, who formed his collections at Ambras Castle. Rudolph II also made an invaluable contribution, because he opened the gallery and the Kunstkamera in the Prague Castle, the most famous exhibits of which were later transported to Vienna. The famous works of Dürer and Brueghel are now in the Vienna Museum of the History of Art precisely thanks to Rudolf.

The founder of the museum itself is called Leopold-Wilhelm, whose gallery is considered one of the most informative and extensive.

The Vienna Museum of Art was opened in 1889 and successfully functioned until the Second World War. Then the building itself was badly damaged, but almost all the valuables were saved, since they were removed and hidden in advance. The museum became again accessible to the public in 1959.

Inspection of all exhibits may take more than one day. The main building of the museum has 91 halls. Below are the main collections that are located there:

1. Egyptian and Middle Eastern Collection

Here are collected more than 17 thousand items dating from 3500 BC.
The collection is divided into 4 parts:

  • funeral cult
  • cultural history
  • sculpture and relief
  • writing development

2. Collection of Greek and Roman art

Counts more than 2500 items, and covers the period of 3 millennia, starting from the Bronze Age and ending with the early Middle Ages. It is divided thematically into three parts:

3. Picture gallery

It is a key building in the museum, begins its history in the Habsburg house and includes a huge number of world masterpieces. Conventionally, works can be divided into such periods:

  • Early dutch painting
  • Painting of the German Renaissance

4. Kunstkamera

It is the cradle of the museum. It was reopened on March 1, 2013 after 10 years of restoration work. In 20 rooms, more than 2000 truly stunning and unique exhibits have been collected.

5. Collection of coins

It is one of the five largest coin collections in the world. It counts about 700 thousand items over a period of three millennia, and includes bills in addition to coins, as well as a variety of items that served as a barter before the invention of money.

6. Library

It has 256 thousand units, 36 thousand of which are of historical importance.

7. Collection of historical musical instruments

A unique collection of instruments of the Renaissance and Baroque, as well as the instruments of many famous musicians. Many of them can not only be watched, but also listened.

8. Collection of weapons and armor
