The natural corners of ancient parks and gardens, the picturesque surroundings of Saratov and Tarusa have always served as a source of inspiration for Victor Elpidiforovich Borisov-Musatov.
Romantic, slightly mysterious landscapes are an integral part of his paintings, giving the image a harmonious integrity, creating a certain mood. In the last year of his life, the artist writes this sad autumn landscape.
Quiet autumn day. From the hillock there is a magnificent view of the distant districts. Among the low banks, overgrown with low bushes, a small rivulet slowly flows. In calm water the high sky is reflected. Behind it lies a wide meadow. Among the spots of reddish-brown, gray-beige withered grass visible marsh-olive, just beginning to turn yellow, islets of greenery.
The dense forest goes into the distance, hiding behind a ghostly haze near the horizon. Among the chocolate-bronze crowns of the trees, the dark greens of fluffy firs are visible.
And above these open spaces stretched a high blue sky, covered by light, translucent clouds. Flocks of birds, gathered in a wedge, fly away to warmer climes.
Framing this picture, there are slender birches. White trunks are visible among the yellow foliage, playing in various shades: lemon, golden-orange, warm amber. Thin branches lean down. The clear, cool air is filled with the smells of later flowers and moist earth.
Soft, muted colors, slightly blurred contours give the image softness and a touch of unreality.
There are many sounds in the picture - a soft rustle of leaves, sad farewell cries of birds, a barely audible rustle of dry grass. Autumn song of nature - a moment of beauty captured by the artist.
Filled with light and warmth, very lyrical, the work gives rise to a feeling of piercing sadness, recalling the transience of life, it sounds like a foreboding of the imminent departure of the master.
